Mariah Carey Explains Why Keeping Her Kids Grounded Is So Important To Her

Mariah Carey is a self-made woman. She didn't grow up with money and had a humbling childhood. Because of her upbringing, the pop icon is adamant on ensuring her kids — 8-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan — stay as modest as they can be.

“It’s hard, but I try to keep them grounded so they don’t think everything is just handed to them,” the 49-year-old mother told People.

“Right now it’s like, ‘I want this,’ and I’m like, ‘You’re asking me for something that costs $20.’ I can’t even imagine having, like, one dollar as a kid because we didn’t have money going around,” she continued. “So they have to appreciate those things.”

Raising twins is tough, but Carey wouldn't change it for the world. “They’re a lot, but they give me so much love in return. I wouldn’t be the same person without them,” she says of the children she shares with ex-husband Nick Cannon. “I think Nick and I have done pretty well in co-parenting, staying friends with each other so that we can talk.”

In other Mimi news, the queen was dethroned last month when Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" usurped her collaboration with Boyz II Men, "One Sweet Day," as the longest running No. 1 single in Billboard Hot 100 history.
