2021 is already looking very bright for Liz Garcia. Not only has the San Antonio-based singer-songwriter released her highly anticipated sophomore album just before Christmas and been nominated in several categories at the All-Star Music Awards, she now has the extreme honor of beingnamed the Readers’ Choice Best Band/Musicianin 2021 Best of the City issue ofSan Antonio Magazine.
This is no small feat andSan Antonio Magazineis no fly-by-night publication with only a handful of readers, either. According to its website, the publication launched in 2005, reaches over 90,000 readers per issue, and is available on over 200 newsstands throughout south Texas and the Hill Country. Its parent company is Big Sky Media, which also publishes Austin Monthly and Texas Music magazine. Every year, the magazine publishes its Best of the City honors, which include dozens of categories, separated into picks chosen by its editors and Reader’s Choice Winners. Voting took place in December 2020 and Garcia was a finalist alongside such popular and well-respected San Antonio acts like the Kevin Nabors Quartet, Bombasta, and C-Rock.
This is not only an accomplishment for the hardworking and prolific Garcia; it’s an accomplishment for Tejano music too. As all fans of the music know all too well, Tejano is not often seen or mentioned in media outside the genre in this manner. For readers of the magazine to not only vote for a Tejano artist but also an up-and-coming female Tejano artist, is remarkable.
This comes as no surprise, however, to Garcia’s fans, who already knew of her talent and have believed in her since the beginning of her career. As noted in this review of her latest album, Una Estrella, Garcia has written 16 out of the 20 songs on her first two albums – a commendable effort for any established artist in any genre, let alone someone who is only four years into her musical journey.
